Here are some pics of my first attempt at some PR for Rose Bay in Sydney.  I am not too sure about it as my system is struggling for frames with FlyTampas Sydney installed already, and I am struggling to find much information on YRAY Rose Bay.  I have found some pictures relating mostly to Sydney Seaplanes and the Catalina restaurant, which are both located at Rose Bay.  I hope to find enough pics to allow me to try some modelling of the buildings.  I have kept the PR pretty small, and it is basically just Rose Bay, The Royal Sydney Golf club, Shark Island, and a few streets along the coast around Rose Bay.  I hope to create some custom models for the buildings in the vicinity of the Rose Bay SPB, and I will add an ADE file, if I ever find the location of the water runways.

Mate that is stunning..So sharp and clear. At long last a better Sydney Harbour.. I wish I had known that you were doing this as I just gave up on Flytampa Sydney and butchered the files to get it to run.. (I believe that the big FR eater is the Qantas building, you could try removing that) anyway, I have added a bunch of stuff to Sydney Harbour for own use and I would love to Beta any of your Rose Bay or any of the Sydney harbour files to see how they fit in to my Sydney files.. Teecee.

PPS: Just re-read all this and it looks like I am trying to Hijack your thread.. Not so, I am just so exited that you have undertaken this work.. Thank you so much..again.

Sorry, messed the links up.. you will need to click on the other two links.

This is my current Sydney.. More highrises particularly on the northern side of the bridge

A closer look at my North Shore

And although i have been away from Sydney for close ot twenty years "I still call Sydney home" this is my main screensaver.

There is one area I would love to see done, the peninsular that houses Taronga Park Zoo.. that whole area is nothing but trees in the Sim..sooo incorrect.. Any chance of this Scott?.

Not sure about the old Rose Bay Flying Boat area.. it's been gone for so long that I believe it does not belong in modern day Sydney, perhaps as a separate release?Teecee.

Hi Scott,

I think you just inserted a cat into the bird cage :)
You have a lot of avid anticipatious followers, quivering with excitement.
I seem to recall seeing some old articles of some kind on Rose Bay.
Did you download the FS2004 version (has the AWA building & a flying boat base way up in The Gulf Country)?.
What happens for me when I load the FS2004 scenery is that I end up with it locating several hundred feet inland, & alpha problems with various trees & some buildings etc.
Also, the ground ends up with large anomalies in the form of trenches & banks. Usually across where there's water.
Oh and how do I get rid of that huge wharf you have showing?.
I'll have a look tom....er....later today (after sleeps) to see if I have anything on Rose Bay. :)

Hi Scott,

Currently I have twenty odd tabs in my browser aluding to Rose Bay, and I've included the links I think you may find helpfull below:-
Also, a "Rose Bay" search on flightsim throws up some interesting stuff you may find interesting to check out. But nearly all is FS2004.

Thanks all for the comments and interest.

Teecee, that's a great photo you have on your desktop.  No promises or timelines, but I may have a look at the missing areas you mentioned.  I will also post something up for you to have a look.  I'm not overly confident about creating custom models without more photos and information, so I may do a version with just autogen as a fill in until I can get some buildings done.  This scenery was just a spur of the moment decision last week.  I will re-do the water mask, as at the moment I have just used a shapefile of Australia waterways to create a rough watermask (which is how I'm doing all of France), but it is pretty rough if you look up close.

Matt, I was considering doing the whole harbour, and I might still do some more.  I was considering this scenery since Noel sparked my interest about the area a few weeks back, but I held off starting anything until I got Fly Tampa's Sydney, to see what areas they had covered.  I was especially curious about the area further West with all of the ships.  I guess you know that area well.  It's funny, while I've been doing France PR, I've noticed there are so many Naval areas, Miitary Airports and even refineries etc that are blurred out totally.

Even when I downloaded the imagery, it took me ages to decide if I was going to do just Rose Bay or more, and I thought I should also include nearby Bondi Beach, but I think Fly Tampa did actually cover that.

Noel, first of all, I haven't replied in your support query thread, but I did actually try out the Rose Bay 2004 scenery to try and replicate the trenches you were getting, but I didn't get much at all.  The only things I did notice were a small building and a pier slightly inland from the Rose Bay shore.  I couldn't even find the AWA building, which was supposedly included in the scenery.  I will probably have another look at that and post in you support thread, as I had a couple of questions to ask you about your Rose Bay scenery.

Thanks for all of the links Noel, I'm sure I will find plenty of info there.

That aerial photo and diagram are Gold!  Thanks.

Cheers,

I can help you with those blurry areas on middle and south head and further in the harbour

i was surprised about the lack of detail for Sydney harbour with fly tampa, orbx doesn't do it any justice as well

maybe a project for the future to add all the small islands and key features of Sydney harbour like mrs mac chair and North Sydney

Hi Scott,

The "small building and a pier slightly inland from the Rose Bay shore" are the misplaced FS2004 ones. Same thing happens with some other coastal scenery items by I think the same author?.
The AWA building is actually where it belongs. But you will have a job to see it, as it's encased inside a large skyscraper!, with just part of the tower & a sliver of facing showing through. I guess it didn't have a 'force-shield' built around it (to prevent auto-gen buildings trying to pinch it's spot). :(
The FS2004 Rose Bay file is actually called "FS2004 Scenery--AWA Blg. - Rose Bay" (Flightsim " cbausbk.zip " )
Based on circa 1940's:-
"Size: 1,911,658 Date: 02-19-2006 Downloads: 863

cbausbk.gif
FS2004 Scenery--AWA Blg. - Rose Bay - Karumba - 1938. In Sydney City, the distinctive art-deco style AWA office building and radio-broadcast transmission tower, depicted as it was in the 1940's, with the original AWA sign. Also in Sydney, the one-off terminal building at Rose Bay, built for the Empire-route flying boat service. And at Karumba, Northern Territory, the Civil Aviation Authority's support and service base, with the staff quarters and aeradio center. Enhance your Golden Wings 3 or default FS2004 experience with some period accessories! By Bruce Kennewell and Lou Frost.

Mate, Now  you're talking.. There is so much to see on Australia's East Coast and particularly around the Sydney area.. The default stuff is awful, and although Orbx does a great job through there, I have always felt that the area lacks much important detail..

One of the benefits to me from Flytampa's Sydney is the great Botany Bay coastline and the coastline between Botany Bay and the Sydney  Heads.. Magic, even though I had to butcher the Flytampa file to get it run I was able to maintain this part of the scenery and it was worth the expense to get the coastline.

It's so great to see that some of our best scenery developers are taking an interest.. It looks like Sydney and surrounds are going to get a great facelift. Teecee.

I have been trying to make a start on a few models for Rose Bay last night and today, with no luck as yet.  I'm using Instant Object Studio, but the models I am trying to make keep crashing it, as they are too complex.  I might have to start new with another program, maybe gmax or sketchup.  I've been downloading a lot of pics of the  area, and today came across this website featuring a you tube video of The Rose Bay Ferry Wharf upgrade, featuring all of the models I am trying to make.  Maybe I'll just contact Urban Circus and ask if I can use their models ;).  I wish!

Rose Bay is on my wish list for future projects, I know the area well and it is being revamped at the moment so it would make a great scenery addon for OZx. Scott, if you would like to collaborate on this scenery send me a PM. Cheers, Ben

To see Sydney Harbour finally modelled say based on the Rose Bay flying boat era will be one of the greatest achievements in FSX/FTX ever.
Thinking of Canberra, Broome, Bankstown, it's not impossible. Some of the key areas already done by others (refer my posts this thread above; with links) are:-

___Rose Bay & various other WWII PBY flying boat bases. Very good.

___Pinchgut Isle. Very good

___AWA building. Very good, but buried inside auto-gen building.

___Sydney Harbour Bridge. Very good.

___Opera House. Very good, but annoying 'pop-up' helicopter pad text.

___Rose Bay flying boat base 2004 plus Berowra Waters etc? (has alpha? texture and ground distortion problems in FSX for me. ie trees with black rectangles, and strange 'hook-up' problems with a yacht at Berowra Waters on takeoff).

So then, The North South & Inner heads, Zoo, Circular Quay, Rocks area (& Telescope building?), Darling Harbour, Luna Park, Botanical Gardens, Government House & Chair, key buildings (Conservatory of Music, Cathedral, Cenotaph, Museum, St James Station park with entrance building, Kings Cross & fire station, plus several other significant buildings & POI.
A great Team Project methinks. But imagine how good this could be!!. Maybe released in stages would be best.

The hangar in some of the shots at Rose Bay appears to be one that can be found in some RAF hangar Libs. Think I still have them somewhere.

Good to see that there is still interest in this area..I hope we get some of the team interested as Sydney harbour is perhaps the most famous harbour in the world, and definitely the biggest natural harbour. Fingers Crossed.. Teecee.
