Mk 1 Spitfire P9374 is reborn

Apparently there are only four Mk1 Spitfires still flying, not sure if P9374 is #5 or #4

It is quite some story, P9374 made a forced landing on the beach at Calais in 1940(?) was covered by the sand for many years before being rediscovered, long story short, after three years of restoration it took to the air again. Now it going under the hammer at Christie's Auction House on July 9

Extract from Christie's press release gives  a wealth of  background info relating to this a/c

In September 1980 the wreckage of Spitfire P9374 emerged from the sands of Calais beach where it had crash-landed after being shot down on 24 May 1940 during the air battle of Dunkirk. With eight Browning machine guns hiding beneath elliptical wings, Peter Cazenove, Flying Officer and later a veteran of the ‘Great Escape’, was flying the aircraft when it was attacked and hit by what is thought to have been a single bullet fired from a Dornier 17-Z bomber. Before executing his belly-landing on Calais beach, Cazenove had radioed that he was OK, and: “Tell mother I’ll be home for tea!” Cazenove was soon captured as a Prisoner of War and Spitfire P9374 was consumed by successive tides and sunk deeper into the sands; he sadly passed away shortly before the recovery of his aircraft.

Spitfire P9374 was one of a batch of 183 aircraft built by Supermarine Ltd. (Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Ltd.) under contract number 980385/38 from the Air Ministry. After factory test flying P9374 was delivered to R.A.F. Hornchurch on 2 March 1940 and then joined 92 Squadron at R.A.F. Northolt on 6 March 1940. On 24 May 1940 P9374 was hit in action and forced to land on the beach near Calais where it remained gradually consumed by the shifting sands until re-emerging in 1980. A long restoration and rebuild was completed by the Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford, finally returning to the skies on 30 August 2011. It is a low wing monoplane fighter aircraft with fuselage of stressed-skin construction, the wing assemblies with eight de-activated Browning machine guns.
