  1. ND UH1-H 1/9 AirCav Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore

    Willard and the PBR crew rendezvous with the 1/9 AirCav, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore (Robert Duvall) for transport to the Nung River. He initially refuses their request for transport until Kilgore, a keen surfer, is told by one of his men that Lance Johnson, a professional surfer, is a member of the boat's crew. Kilgore befriends Johnson, and later learns from one of his men that the beach down the coast which marks the opening to the river is perfect for surfing. This changes his mind about transporting Willard and the PBR and Kilgore decides to capture the village. His men advise him that it's "Charlie's point" and heavily fortified. Dismissing this concern with the explanation that "Charlie don't surf!," Kilgore orders his men to saddle up in the morning to capture the town and the beach.

    Riding high above the coast in a fleet of Hueys accompanied by OH-6As, Kilgore launches his attack on the beach. The scene, famous for its use of Richard Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," ends with the soldiers surfing the barely-secured beach amidst skirmishes between infantry and VC. After helicopters swoop over the village and demolish all visible signs of resistance, a giant napalm strike in the nearby jungle dramatically marks the climax of the battle. Kilgore exults to Willard, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning... The smell, you know that gasoline smell... Smelled like, victory" as he recalls a battle in which a hill was bombarded with napalm for over twelve hours.

  3. ND UH1-H B Company, 229th Aviation Battalion

    "Killer Spade", a B Company UH-1H from 1968-69 period. Most vertical stripes have been removed from the ship except for a black stripe on the engine cowling. The 1st Cav Div emblem has moved from the tail boom to the tail. This B Company ship has red skid tips, both on the front and back edges. The red skid tips indicated 1st Platoon. This B Company aircraft had a black spade inside the B Company symbol on the doors. There is a small yellow sign with a black numeral "1" in the bottom edge of aircraft commander's window. This identified the lead aircraft in a combat assault. The ship was nicknamed "Killer Spade".

  4. ND UH1-H A Troop 2/17th Cavalry, 101st Airborne Division

    A Troop aircraft carried a red stripe on the tail boom. The first two digits of the tail number were painted in black, the last three digits were in white. Some A Troop ships carried crossed yellow cavalry sabers on the pilot's doors or nose, but this was not universal practice by all crews

  5. ND UH1-H HQ 2/17th Cavalry, 101st Airborne Division

    Sp4 Joseph "Guy" LaPointe was a medic with Headquarters Troop, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry. On June 2, 1969, he was just one day from going on leave to meet his wife and new son. However, SP4 LaPointe volunteered for a mission that day because his replacement was a new guy without any field experience. The patrol landed on the top of Hill 376, near the famous "Hamburger Hill" battle site. Sweeping away from the hilltop LZ, the point man walked into a fire zone from concealed enemy bunkers. Two more men were quickly wounded and "Doc" LaPointe moved forward to aid his wounded buddies. He put himself between the enemy bunkers and the wounded, and began working on the wounded. He was soon hit by enemy fire, but ignoring his own wounds he continued to shield his buddies while tending their wounds. He was hit by a second burst of fire and knocked away from his friends. He crawled back to the wounded again and once more shielded them from enemy fire while resuming his aid. This time an enemy grenade landed among the group, mortally wounding them all, including Doc LaPointe. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously on December 16, 1971.

  6. ND UH1-H A Troop, 229th Aviation Battalion

    Major Bruce Crandall was commander of A Company, 229th Aviation Battalion, on November 14, 1965 at LZ X-Ray. With Captain Freeman's ship following him, Major Crandall flew 14 mission into the hot LZ , taking intense enemy fire to deliver supplies and evacuate wounded from the battle. As his ship was damaged by enemy fire (his crew chief was also wounded on one flight), Major Crandall was forced to switch to another aircraft. He flew a total of three different ships in his effort to support the troops at LZ X-Ray. Major Crandall was finally awarded the Medal of Honor on February 26, 2007.



    Major Crandall's aircraft was very similar in appearance to Ed Freeman's, with one major exception. Major Crandall had a unique A Troop door insignia - a large, winged rattlesnake coiled inside the A Company triangle symbol. The snake is smoking a lit cigar, and blowing smoke out it's nostrils. Mr. Crandall told me that flight crews didn't have assigned aircraft in the 229th. Instead, they took any aircraft that was available for the mission at hand. As a result, at the end of a mission, Major Crandall's crew chief would unhinge Major Crandall's distinctive doors from the aircraft they had just flown. At the beginning of the next mission, his crew chief would fasten the doors in place on the new aircraft they were going to fly! That way, Major Crandall's distinctive doors always marked him out for the other pilots during the mission. Photos also show Major Crandall's ship displaying a small white or yellow sign with the numeral "1" on the frame post just behind the pilots' doors. This signified the lead ship in the combat assault mission. Major Crandall's ship may or may not have had his rear cargo door present. He did not have an M60 hard mount or any free-swinging M60 in use during LZ X-Ray. I don't have any photo evidence that his ship carried the tail boom antenna, but other 229th Hueys during this time period did, so I illustrated Mr. Crandall's aircraft with this detail. Mr. Crandall doesn't remember what a/c number his ship had on the morning of November 14th, 1965. Based on Andy Spencer's research of early 229th a/c numbers, and based on photos show Bruce Crandall flying ship number "888" on occasion, I illustrated his aircraft as a/c number 63-08888

  7. ND UH1-C HML-367 Gunship

    HML-367 relocated to MCAS Futenma on Okinawa when they left Vietnam in June, 1971. After leaving Vietnam, high visibility markings were once again placed on Marine helicopters. Aircraft numbers and the MARINE legend are painted in white. The color national emblem reappears on the tail boom. The yellow warning band at the rear of the tail boom also reappears. HML-367 Hueys carried the unit logo on the nose at this time. Six UH-1Es from this unit participated in the final evacuation of Saigon in April 1975 ("Operation Frequent Wind"). They flew from one of the carriers operating off the coast during the evacuation.

    The 135th was a typical Vietnam era Assault Helicopter Company with the major exception that it was composed of both U.S. Army and Royal Australian Navy personnel. Because of this unique composition, the 135th was considered an Experimental Military Unit, hence its call sign E.M.U. or EMU

    This paint depicts the cab that was on low level ops about 6 miles from Blackhorse when their gunship was hit by an RPG causing their subsequent crash & explosion resulting the death of all 4 crew members, which included 2 members of the Royal Australian Navy 21 Aug 68

  10. ND UH1-H 82nd Medical Detachment

    By 1964 the 57th Medical Detachment was being overwhelmed by demands being made on them by increased US and Vietnamese operations. At one point the 57th had only two flyable aircraft! In response President Johnson ordered the deployment of five new helicopter medical detachments to Vietnam. The 82nd Medical Detachment at Fort Sam Houston was the first of the new units to go to Vietnam, arriving in October 1964. They were originally co-located with the 57th at Soc Trang so they could gain the experience of the veteran unit. Once they were declared mission ready, the 82nd moved to Binh Thuy.

    In 1967-69 82nd ships had a unique insignia painted on their pilot's doors (see insignia at left). The Red Cross insignia on the cargo doors and nose was also unique. The 82nd used a red cross design that outlined the cross in white, and completely deleted the white square background found on typical red cross markings. At least some 82nd ships also had the front ends of their skids painted red.

  11. ND UH1-H 173rd Airborne Brigade Command

    The 173rd Airborne Brigade deployed to Vietnam in May, 1965. They served in III Corps, based at Bien Hoa, until mid 1967. They moved to II Corps and based at An Khe until April 1969. They then moved toward the coast to conduct operations along Route 1-the main north/south highway in Vietnam. They based out of Bong Son in II Corps until leaving Vietnam in August, 1971.

    This UH-1H, served as a command aircraft for the 173rd Brigade in early-mid 1969. The Brigade logo is displayed on the front cargo door. The logo possibly also appeared on the nose. Photos of some other 173rd ships from this period have the brigade nose insignia. A red and white Brigadier General's placard is displayed on the frame post behind the pilot's door. The front edges of the skids are painted yellow. A step was attached to each side of most command and VIP Hueys. It was located just below the bottom edge of the cargo deck, and just behind the front cargo door. The tail can't be seen on photos of this aircraft, so tail details are speculative

  12. ND UH1-H AMERICAL C&C

    This is one of AMERICAL Division's C&C/VIP ships from the 1970-71 period. AMERICAL directed each aviation unit that supported it to assign aircraft to the division command staff for C&C and VIP duties. Aviation units were directed to remove unit insignia from the ships they sent on to the division. Aircraft 70-15719 was a brand new UH-1H recently delivered to the first platoon "Yellow Jackets" of the 116th AHC. This Huey was nicknamed "King Bee 719" by the 116th. When the ship was assigned to AMERICAL the 116th "Hornet" nose art and distinctive yellow skid markings remained on the ship - in defiance of the division directive.

    In addition to the 116th Hornet nose art, a distinctive rectangle emblem appeared on the tail. The rectangle was divided into red-blue-red vertical stripes, with the AMERICAL Division insignia placed on the blue bar. The rectangle was outlined in white. The five-digit tail number was painted in two colors - the first two numbers (15) in black, and the last three digits (719) in yellow. A step was added below the cargo bay deck - a common practice for C&C and VIP ships.

  13. ND UH1-H 4th Infantry Division C&C/VIP ship

    The 4th Infantry Division in Vietnam had an organic aviation element, the 4th Aviation Battalion. The battalion consisted of two companies. A Company was divided into 3 platoons. The 1st Platoon flew C&C and VIP duties for the division (2nd and 3rd Platoons flew general utility missions like troop transport and supply).

    1st Platoon was named "the Lizards". Aircraft in the platoon were named "Lizard 1", "Lizard 2", etc... In 1968-70 the platoon flew UH-1Hs. Noses were painted completely OD. The platoon displayed a distinctive nose art - a cartoon lizard wearing white aviator's goggles. The aircraft had red stinger covers (tail ends) and red skid tips. A black spade was painted on the front cargo door on the right side of the ship. The ship number ("Lizard 7" is illustrated here) was painted in white in the center of the spade logo. The upper surface and outer edge of the horizontal tail plane/sync elevator began to be painted orange around 1969. A step was added below the cargo deck on 1st platoon ships. FM antennas were mounted on the skids at the front cross brace.

Collided with RSAF A-4 30/03/83 1 nm south of Tengah Airfield, Singapore Midair collision with RSAF Skyhawk A-4S No 636 whilst on finals for Rwy 36. Mirage pilot ejected at 400 ft and 190 kts with only minor injuries. Skyhawk pilot (LTA Foo Siew Ngan) also ejected successfully. One civilian on ground killed. Crew; FLGOFF J.T. O'Halloran. RAAF Ejection number 60
